‘Dust Echoes’ learning resource

The ‘Dust Echoes’ animated dreamtime stories are an insightful and valuable learning resource provided by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that explore and proudly demonstrate representations of Indigenous traditional cultures. This resource was discovered on the Foundation for Upgrading the Standard of Education (FUSE) webpage, where there are a further set of activities that coincide with the Dust Echoes content.

This resource stood out to me because I believe that engaging with this rich form of storytelling media would be an impactful way to learn about indigenous cultures and past times. The resource has a selection of 12 short stories, providing students with the opportunity to select and explore stories of interest to then reflect upon them with purpose. This animated form of storytelling will be especially of interest to year 7 and 8’s and will support students in generating new understandings of Indigenous lifeways.

Aligning with the Australian curriculum’s year 7 and 8 bands, the Dust Echoes resource links strongly to the content descriptor (ACAMAR072), where students look to “identify specific features and purposes of media artworks from contemporary and past times to explore viewpoints and enrich their media arts making, starting with Australian media artworks including of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander media artworks” (ACARA, 2010). This resource encourages students to “[analyse] the role of media artworks and media artists in transmitting cultural information and creating awareness of contemporary issues” (ACARA, 2010), consider how media artworks are perceived in different contexts, and challenge themselves to learn of ethical media practices (ACARA, 2010). Through learning from this resource, students will be well-positioned to gain new intercultural understandings and improve their personal and social capabilities.

This resource provides teachers with a space to utilise inquiry-based pedagogies to encourage students to challenge their understandings and form newly educated viewpoints on indigenous cultures. Incorporating this resource content into the curriculum will support the actions towards diverse inclusivity. A selection of dreamtime stories could be selected to focus on across a few lessons, or the FUSE provides activities could be expanded into a larger project where students engage with multiple stories to create a refined media product based on their learnings.

This resource has a contemporary design and is easy to navigate, with all 12 dreamtime stories linked and available to watch on the site. Each story is accompanied by a set of rich questions that invite students to inquire into the messages of the story and the cultural significance of the stories’ featured themes. On the Dust Echoes FUSE webpage, a further set of activities are listed for teachers to manipulate to meet the required year levels. In relation to media studies, the FUSE task asks students to create their own ‘dreamtime story’ that emulates the style of story that has been viewed, followed by a respond task that requires students to delve deep into the meanings of each story. This resource strongly meets the requirements of the Australian Curriculum Making and Responding strands.
