Refined Resource Analysis

Art and Design Education VCE

The Art and Design Education (Caudullo and Kelly, 2020) webpage is an excellent flipped learning resource that provides a wide and detailed range of VCE resources and curriculum development support. Created by experienced teaching and art professionals, the Art and Design Education webpage features easy-to-navigate drop-down tabs for each VCE arts area, where you can find substantial ‘area of study’ overviews, a variety of learning and teaching resources, and a blend of integrated VCAA assessment and production outlines. Specifically, the VCD web space includes informative outlines of the design process, related practical activities, and focused support in facilitating inquiry. Each art area features an elaborate content space for exam preparation, providing support with revising key concepts and exam question samples that can be visited throughout the year.

Design Museum

Design Museum (2024) is a great contemporary web resource that contains a large variety of exhibitions, artist profiles, lesson plans, and purposeful questioning tasks that can enhance learning in design and support the development of modern teaching approaches. Through easy-to-navigate top menus, teachers can access lesson plans that focus on the varying fields of practice, view exhibition notes, and interact with the various contemporary resources that support the shaping of inquiry tasks. For students, the Design Museum website is a great location to explore new exhibitions, designers of inspiration, and production activities, while refining their knowledge of ‘good design’ and the best principles of design practice.

VISCOMM: A Guide to Visual Communication Design

The VISCOMM: A Guide to Visual Communication Design textbook (Patterson, 2023) is a great resource for teachers to implement into their planning alongside the VCD Study Design. The textbook decisively covers the VCD design process across several chapters, includes updated and contemporary case studies, and provides practical student examples of recent unit 3 and 4 VCD work. Furthermore, each area of study within the new VCD Study Design is covered specifically in its own chapter, accompanied by new and proven assessment tasks, and comprehensive teaching plans to seamlessly support the delivery of VCD across all models.

YouTube

The YouTube (2024) video platform is an excellent practical resource that provides teachers with the opportunity to integrate useful video content into their teaching and planning. For VCD, the website can be an informative space to guide students towards software tutorials, design process explanations, or specific practice ‘How to’ videos, while supporting teachers in the transmission of important design presentation examples in areas such as pitching, creating a brief, and developing personas. It’s important for students to have a visual understanding of the learning they’re expected to complete, and the YouTube platform supports this notion, being a dynamic educational resource with varying capabilities

VCD Study Design

The VCD Study Design (2023) is an integral document that guides and oversees the implementation of curriculum content and planning throughout units 3 and 4, often being the first place both teachers and students will look to find key information and support while progressing through purposeful areas of study. The Study Design provides a clear overview of the unit aims, structure, knowledge and skills, and design learning specifications that students will interact with over the course of the year, behaving as an important point of reference to guide how students approach design outcomes and review their progress in meeting objectives.

VCAA VCE VCD Support Materials

To support the planning of VCD units 3 and 4, the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA, 2024) has provided teachers with a webpage resource that contains a wide variety of support materials to aid in the development of curriculum, learning, and assessment approaches. The VCAA web resource can be effectively used as a flipped learning tool, including a space that contains in-depth summaries of various design-specific content areas such as the design elements and principles, fields of practice, and the overall scope of the design process. Along with an extensive year-long planning guide that outlines the key components and important areas of inquiry to explore each week, the web resource further provides detailed learning activities and examples to inspire teaching approaches and engage students in purposeful questioning and inquiry methods.
